The first Saturday of March, every Soroptimist Club in the Soroptimist International of the Americas Federation (which includes North, Central and South America, the Philippines, Korea and Japan) is called the Saturday of Service. Each club decides what “hands-on-project” it will undertake within our Mission Statement to help achieve a goal.
Most of those projects are local but often are area-wide, country-wide or international in scope. SI of Palm Springs has participated in each of these areas. We have had workshops for local teens to help them with self-esteem and career plans. We painted rooms at the House of Hope (and had so much fun doing it!) We sponsored a Foster Mother’s Day where we ‘children sat’ kids of all ages so their foster parents could have a day to themselves, to rest, relax, or just do whatever it was they wanted without having to worry about the kids from breakfast time to just before dinner. This past March, after collecting bras from family and friends, we packed over 350 new or gently used bras to ship them with others collected from all over the country to a village in Mozambique so that women there could get started in businesses on their own and begin to earn a living for themselves and their families.
